2012-W Uncirculated Gold Eagle $50

The Unites States Mint has just began sales for the 2012-W Uncirculated American $50 Gold Eagle. Collectors can expect an opportunity to own this incredibly collectible issue certified in 69 and 70 grades sometime by mid July. The Mint refers to this issue as the “numismatic version” and each coin bears the “W” mint mark. The name satin finish, or burnished die comes from the process in which these coins are created. The Mint uses specially prepared burnished blanks that have undergone a vapor blasting technique that gives the coin it’s unique finish.

Since this issue was first released back in 2006 as a part of the 3 coin 20th Anniversary Gold Eagle set, serious collectors have been drawn to this coin for its serious numismatic appeal. Out of all three varieties of Gold Eagles currently struck, the burnished die coins have the lowest mintage numbers of them all. In fact, last year’s issue had reported mintage of only 8,822 making it the lowest minted Gold Eagle in history.

In 2006, the Mint struck additional $5, $10 and $25 denominations to pair with the $50 for a complete 4 coin set offer. This was also the case again in 2007 and 2008. With the overwhelming demand for gold in 2009 and 2010, the U.S Mint halted production of the W uncirculated versions and applied all of their resources towards the bullion program which has first rights to the available gold. In 2011, the program was brought back only for the $50 issue. As of now, it is uncertain if the Mint will release the $5, $10, and $25 coins for 2012 to complete the set.
