November 22, 1963, John F. Kennedy was shot down while in his presidential motorcade on the streets of Dallas Texas. A coin representing Kennedy was conceived the very day of his assassination. Within hours of the shooting, Director of the Mint Eva Adams spoke with Chief Engraver Gilroy Roberts about depicting Kennedy on a coin. First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy selected the half dollar for the coin’s denomination. About one month after Kennedy’s death, Congress approved the new issue to memorialize the slain president.

The Kennedy half dollar captured the public’s imagination, and coins sold for a premium from the first day of their release. Large quantities were produced, although mintage figures decreased over the years because the coins were not being used in circulation but rather hoarded by collectors. 1964 was the only production year where the Kennedy half dollar was composed of 90% silver. Going forward the coins were struck with a copper core, nickel and silver outer layers.

2014 marks the 50th anniversary of the John F. Kennedy half dollar. The U.S. Mint will soon be revealing plans to strike a special Kennedy set later this year. They have sent out a couple surveys regarding the possibility of this special release. There has been discussion of a 2014 Kennedy 24k gold half dollar that has collectors on the edge of their seats. Additionally, there has been talk of a reverse proof Kennedy piece. At this time, all the specifics are uncertain.

The CCAC (Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee)meeting will be take place February 11, and more finalized details will most certainly be released. If they decide to go ahead with a 24k Gold Kennedy half dollar, it will certainly be a highlight of releases for 2014.
