The 1 oz 2013 reverse proof 24k gold buffalo offering will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the James Earl Fraser design on the ever popular buffalo nickel minted from 1913 to 1938. The Mint is yet to set a release date for this coin but we will be releasing updates as soon as they are available.

Packaging for the 2013 reverse proof 24k gold buffalo will be consistent with the wood packaging of recent proof issue, with exception to the outer box which will have a leather-like material to set the products apart.

The reverse proof gold buffalo will be minted at the West Point Mint bearing the W and sold only as a stand alone offering and not in conjunction with any other products. These coins will be minted to demand so it is unclear how few will be produced.

The Mint began selling the 2013 Proof Gold Eagles just days ago and gold collectors could not be happier with the timing. Gold in the last 30 days has taken a $220 hit which will reflect in the overall pricing of this years collection. The traditional four coins being offered include the one-tenth, one-quarter, one-half, one-ounce coins as well as the four coin collecting including all denominations.

Several things need to be noted about this year’s offering from the U.S. Mint. In response to last year’s low mintages on Proof Gold Eagles, the Mint has reduced this year’s maximum production numbers.

2013 Proof Gold Eagle Mintage Limits

Just days into the offering, opening sales figures have been released by the U.S. Mint and we are extremely pleased with the data. It appears they are currently running in line with last years opening sales figures. Last year’s 2012 Proof Gold Eagle set broke records on all four denominations as the lowest minted Gold Eagles in the entire series.

Late in December 2012, the marketplace speculated that the upcoming West Point Two Coin Set was going to be a 75th celebration since the opening of the West Point bullion reserve facility. This year there has been rumors that this set will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the West Point Mint gaining official mint status. The U.S. Mint recently announced more specific details about this set listed on their website as coming in May 9th. The set will not celebrate any anniversary, yet follow the Mint’s tradition of offering special American Eagle coins.

The limited special two coin set is going to consist of a reverse proof coin and the first ever enhanced silver eagle uncirculated coin. As far as the rarity, we know that this set will only be offered for a one month period. That is the same time window of last year’s San Francisco 75th Anniversary set which was offered for a one month period and finished with only 224,981 total sets becoming a key date set (3rd lowest minted in series). Will this set have a similar low mintage?

We have also confirmed with the Mint that they will also be displaying the sales ticker as these sets are sold keeping the market updated with round about mintage numbers. 

A Couple First Ever Issues-2013 W Enhanced Silver Eagle Uncirculated Coin and a W Reverse Proof Coin

The set will feature two “first ever issues” making it extremely exciting to collectors. First coin will be a reverse proof, 4th time being struck in the entire 28 year series. However, this reverse proof will be the first to be struck at the West Point Mint and bearing the exclusive W mint mark.

The main highlight of the collection is the first ever “specially enhanced” silver eagle uncirculated coin. It will be the first coin produced by the US Mint that displays three different contrasting finishes: mirrored brilliant, light frosted and heavy frosted. New minting processes were developed to produce this unique coin. The first thing that stands out about this design is the contrasting finishes on the flag robe Lady Liberty is wearing. Each letter, star and stripe is much more vivid with the new “enhanced” design.

Since the coin features three finishes, it is possible they may create a new designation for this coin. Currently it appears they will be giving it an uncirculated designation, like the burnished die issues. We have also learned that this coin will require a 3-strike minting process meaning they will be striking the coin 3 times during production.

We think this will be one of the most exciting releases in the entire silver eagle series due to the 2013 W enhanced silver eagle uncirculated coin being a one of a kind in 28 years. It will only be available for sale from the Mint for a 30 day window. Based on the influx in calls we are receiving about this set, we expect this to be one of the hottest sellers of the year.
