Congress authorizes Silver Commemorative Coins that celebrate and honor American people, events, places, and institutions. Although these silver coins are legal tender, they are made available only to the collectors market. Each Silver Commemorative Coin is produced by the United States Mint in limited quantity and is only available for a limited time.
As well as commemorating important aspects of American history and culture, these silver coins help raise money for important causes. Included in their price is a surcharge that goes to organizations and projects that benefit the community. Since the modern Silver Commemorative Coin program began in 1982, the United States Mint has raised over $418,000,000.
The US Mint usually releases one or two Silver Commemorative Coin Sets each year. Both proof and mint state coins are made available in special government packaging.
