Each coin contains one troy ounce of pure silver making it the largest US silver dollar coin issued to date. Silver Eagles are also America’s only official investment grade 1oz silver bullion coins. Silver Eagle coins are currently at such a high level of demand that 40% of all the mint state Silver Eagles struck in the 25 years of the program were struck in the last 2 years.
Their obverse design was derived from the U.S. “Walking Liberty” half dollar, first minted in 1916 and designed by sculptor Adolph Alexander Weinman. Walking Liberty is seen in stride while holding an olive branch. Viewed closely, her gown is actually an American flag. The reverse side of the coin features a majestic bald eagle and shield, with 13 stars representing the 13 original American colonies.
The US Mint produces two types of Silver Eagles: Mint State and Proof. Mint state issues are also known as Bullion and investment grade coins. Silver Eagle Proof Coins are considered the coin collector editions as they also have decreased mintages and attractive deep cameo mirrored fields.
